What’s Your Number 1 Primary Purpose?

The other night I was chatting with a friend. The conversation went all over the place. It all centered around living out our Christian faith. It was more or less about what I call the “pursuit of the way“.

One part of the conversation really stuck with me. It was when my friend said this;

Surely…. surely there is more to our lives than just sharing the gospel!

I was shocked at this time, and I’m still shocked now!

I’ve always considered sharing the gospel to be the primary purpose of Christians. But I’m not one to write off someones opinion, especially before thinking, investigating, and praying about it.

So I did. Here’s my thoughts;

I’m still of the belief that the Christians primary purpose is to worship God with their whole life, which looks like partnering with Him in His restoration work on the earth. This means we get about sharing the gospel with everyone we come into contact with. It also means reflecting Christ and His ‘good news’ in every aspect of life through our words and deeds.

Everything else is secondary.

So should we work?

Yes…. and we should work hard, as if serving the Lord (see Colossians 3:23).

But is this our primary purpose?

No.

Should we have a family?

Yes! As it says in 1 Corinthians 7:9 it is better to marry than to burn!! And in Psalm 127:3, that Children are a gift from God.

But, is getting a spouse and children our primary purpose?

No.

Our primary purpose is to know God, and to make Him known.

Everything else is secondary…. not bad… not evil… not a sin…. just secondary.

When secondary things become primary, they become idols…. when they become idols, they become sinful.

Christ is meant to be our all. He’s our saviour. He’s our primary purpose.

Everything else is secondary.

Question: Do you agree? What do you think should be the Christians number 1 primary purpose?
